Mud Sales In Lancaster County, PA

For many people, Groundhog’s Day begins the anticipation of Spring, even though it feels like it won’t ever stay warm! However, Lancaster County, PA, has its own tradition which marks the beginning of Spring: Mud Sales! I have to admit that I have never been to a mud sale and frankly had no clue what they were! But I’ve discovered that they have an interesting history and that Lancaster County, Pa is the only place where you’ll actually discover a mud sale.

Dating back to the mid-1960’s, local volunteer fire companies have held auctions to raise funds. These fundraisers are typically held in late winter/early spring when farmers have more time before they begin planting their harvest. With many of the auctions held outside on the thawing ground, it’s obvious where the name “mud sale” originates!

Thousands of people visit mud sales to find bargains and immerse themselves in Lancaster County’s Amish and Mennonite culture. Each sale has different items, but typical auctioned items include: furniture, craft items, quilts, building materials, livestock, buggies and carriages, tools, farming supplies and equipment, garden items, groceries, and antiques. Most sales begin at 8:30 am, but continue throughout the day, especially since there’s always good food!
