French Creek State Park

I’m in the midst of planning a vacation to visit many state parks, so I can’t help but mention that French Creek State Park is close to Adamstown Inns and Cottages, a Lancaster Pennsylvania bed and breakfast. French Creek has many activities: hiking, swimming, boating, disc golfing, and orienteering. It’s a great place to take a picnic lunch and spend a day outside with the family or your significant other.

I like to start the day on Hopewell lake before the sun is too unbearable. I prefer a double kayak, but they have many boat rentals. Some people even fish on the lake, and there is a ramp if you have your own boat. With 68 acres to explore, you’ll discover native wildlife and plants.

Once the day warms I escape into the woods for a round of disc golf. This is a fairly new game, it’s actually a professional sport, and the course at French Creek is used for tournaments. If you don’t have Frisbees, on weekends you may find a guy selling discs out of his trunk for a reasonable price. My favorite thing about the course is the two levels of difficulty at each hole. This allows my brothers to play the professional hole, and I can play the much shorter beginner hole, but we still get to play together. We have many funny stories of how mom threw the disc into the lake behind her, so I highly recommend Frisbee golf!

After a picnic lunch, under the shade of a tree, we might head to the pool for swimming or to the woods for orienteering or hiking. With 35 miles of trails, choose a trail that fits your ability, or try mountain biking on a few (more difficult) trails.

State Parks have plenty to do that you’ll be ready to head back to the luxury of the Amethyst Inn. Sitting on the porch in the evening, while you drink wine and enjoy the gardens is the perfect end to a day at the park!
